Vocabulary:
A habitat is a space that provides food, water, and shelter to live
A carnivore eats only other animals (owls, coyotes, foxes, and sharks are examples of carnivores)
An herbivore only eats plants (hares, rabbits, antelopes, and deer are herbivores)
An omnivore eats plants and meats (like grass, small animals, and beans)
A shelter is protection from the outside world, a way to keep out of bad weather
A scavenger an animal that eats what is left by other animals
Adapted changed to suit an environment
Climate a type of weather a place has over a long period of time
Hibernate to sleep a long time over a long, cold period (like bears)
The tundra is a cold habitat with low, slow-growing grasses.
Canopy thick tree growth up overhead; we walk under the canopy
Freshwater water needed for drinking; animals that survive in freshwater cannot survive in salt water
Saltwater found the oceans; saltwater animals can't survive in fresh water; people shouldn’t drink it
Camouflage to be hidden, hard to see, have a pattern that keeps you from being seen
Shallow where the water is not deep
Destroy to ruin; fire and pollution destroys habitats
A predator an animal that hunts, and eats other animals (like a lion)
Prey an animal that is eaten by another animals (a lion’s prey could be a zebra)
Extinct has disappeared from the earth; there are no more
Endangered an animal that is disappearing and could become extinct; the bald eagle was endangered, but didn’t become extinct
Rainforest a really wet forest where it rains a lot, tall trees form a canopy
Desert a very hot and dry habitat; not much rain
Savanna a wide-open space with lots of grass, but not that many trees
Arctic a cold, icy habitat with not many large plants
