Our reading program is multifaceted. First, our main reading instruction begins Core Knowledge Language Arts program. This is taught through direct instruction which includes: phonological and phonemic awareness, word decoding and phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Secondly, I-Ready is the online program we use in class to enable students to work at their specific levels. Lexia, is another valuable online-support you could do at home. Next, students meet individual reading goals with books that they themselves choose through the Accelerated Reading program. It is important that students choose books at the appropriate level- NOT TOO DIFFICULT, or too easy! Lastly, a variety of engaging and fun activities which support learning are added in through classroom centers.
Reading is all about thinking! The more students read, they more they are able to analyze and synthesize information, and practice makes perfect! The more students work at reading, the better readers they will be! The amount of time students spend reading matters!
The book report forms and reading logs are now available online! If you need a book log or book report form, click on First Grade Reading->Reading Log and Book Report Forms and download! There's no book report and book log due in May!
