Review of Different Lands, Similar Stories
1. Characters: Characters might include people and talking animals in a story.
2. Setting: The setting of a story is where a story happens or takes place.
3. Plot: The plot of a story is all of the events or things that happen.
4. Lesson: A lesson is something valuable learned through a character’s experiences in a story.
5. Folktale: A folktale is a story that people have told to each other over and over again for a long time.
6. Cherished: You could tell Little Red Riding Hood cherished the gift from her grandmother because she wore it every day and took it everywhere with her.
7. Cautiously: You should always cross the street cautiously because there might be cars or buses driving fast.
8. Fright: Something that scares you- Monsters and loud noises give people a fright.
9. Instructions: Instructions tell us what steps we need to take to complete a task. The instructions tell us how to build a model plane.
10. Worthy: To be deserving of something. Ben is worthy of a hug for being so nice to his brother today.
11. Monstrous: Actions that are like a monster's- The big, scary dog was monstrous, when it barked loudly and almost bit me.
12. Deeds: Our actions- We feel good about ourselves when we do good deeds for others, like helping them clean up toys.
13. Commotion: A commotion is a noisy disturbance or loud noise. In Tom Thumb, all of the commotion woke the cook and the maid and they came running to see what all the noise was about.
14. Cunning: tricky- The wolf was quite cunning, especially when he tricked Little Red Riding Hood into thinking he was her grandmother.
15. Scarcely: almost not- "Her voice is so low, I can scarcely hear what she is saying. " Tom Thumb was scarcely bigger than a thumb.
Part 2: Story Knowledge
1. A wolf tricks Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother.
2. In “Hu Gu Po,” a folktale from China, a tiger disguised as an old woman tries to trick two sisters.
3. Little Red Riding Hood leaves her house in the beginning to visit her grandmother.
4. Tom Thumb is as tall as a thumb.
5. Tom Thumb, Thumbelina, and Issun Boshi all perform helpful deeds even though they are all very little people.
6. In “Cinderella” Cinderella marries the prince. In “The Girl with the Red Slippers”, Rhodopis marries the pharaoh. In “Billy Beg”, Billy marries a princess.
7. Issun Boshi” is set in Japan and “Thumbelina” is set in Denmark.
8. Cinderella leaves her glass slipper behind with the prince, and in “Billy Beg”, a folktale set in Ireland, Billy leaves his boot behind with the princess.
9. Thumbelina saves a swallow’s life by nursing him back to health.
10. A folktale is a story from long ago that has been told over and over again.
