Astronomy Review
Part 1- Vocabulary
1. Atmosphere: A big bubble of air that surrounds the earth, allows us to breath, and protects us from the sun.
2. Gravity: The force or pull of objects down to Earth or toward each other- When you throw a ball into the air, the earth’s gravity brings it back to the ground.
3. Orbit: To travel around- The earth travels in an orbit around the sun.
4. Planet: A planet is a large object that revolves around a sun.
5. Meteor: A meteor is a rock that flies through outer space.
6. Telescopes: Scientists use telescopes to look at outer space.
7. Constellations: Certain groups of stars that seem to form pictures- If you look up in the night sky, you might see constellations, or groups of stars, that look like pictures.
8. Astronaut: An astronaut is someone who travels in outer space.
9. Launch: To send up- Many scientists work together to launch rockets into space.
10. Solar: Things associated with the sun are called solar.
11. Ancient: Ancient means very old- Old stories about the constellations are considered ancient.
12. Appearance: How something looks from the outside- Someone who cares about their appearance would make sure their face is clean and their hair is combed.
13. Determined: To work hard to make a goal- A student who is determined to get good grades would do all his homework and do his best in class.
14. Categorize: To sort or put into a groups with other similar objects- When you have a lot of information to learn, it helps to categorize it, or put it into a chart to help you remember it.
15. Major: Major means large or important.
Part 2-Space Knowledge "Who Am I?"
1. I am the source of light and heat for the whole solar system. (the sun)
2. I am the planet on which we live. (Earth)
3. I revolve around the earth. (the moon)
4. I am known as the “Red Planet”, and astronauts may be able to visit me one day. (Mars)
5. I am the largest planet and have a big red spot, which is actually a storm. (Jupiter)
6. I am a star. (the sun)
7. I was visited by astronauts from Earth. (the moon)
8. I am the smallest planet and closest to the sun. (Mercury)
9. I am the planet with big, beautiful rings. (Saturn)
10. I am the only planet we know about with enough water and oxygen to support life. (the Earth)
11. I am the star that allows life to survive on Earth. (the sun)
12. People call me Earth’s sister planet and the brightest planet, and I can be seen in Earth’s sky. (Venus)
13. I lie on my side, and I’m the only planet not named after a Roman god. (Uranus)

15. I have phases named after how much you see of me: Crescent, half, and full. (moon)
