Geology Specific Vocabulary, Part I
- Extinct: Dinosaurs are extinct because there are no more dinosaurs left on the earth.
- Mantle: The mantle lies between Earth’s dense, super-heated core and its thin outer layer, the crust.
- Inner Core: The inner core is a solid metal ball in the center of the earth.
- Sediments: Layers of sediments, or pieces of dirt and rock, pressed on top of one another form sedimentary rocks.
- Destructive: Some volcanoes can be destructive when their lava and ash damage the land around them.
- Crust: This layer is on the outside of the earth. The crust is a thin layer of different kinds of rocks: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary.
- Geologist: A geologist is a scientist who studies rocks and minerals.
- Fossils: Fossils are the imprint of the remains of animals and plants that died long ago.
- Solid: Something is solid when it keeps its shape. It doesn't take the shape of the container it is in.
- Pressure: Pressure happens when two forces push on each other.
Multiple MeaningVocabulary, Part II
- Varies: When something varies, it changes.
- Characteristics: The characteristics of rocks include their colors, textures, shapes, and sizes.
- Surface: The surface of the earth is on the outside of the earth. We live on the surface.
- Layer: When it is cold outside, we wear many layers of clothing to keep warm.
- Preserved: When you want to save something for the future, you keep it preserved in a safe place.
Labeling a Diagram, Part III
- Directions: Students will label parts of the earth including the North Pole, the South Pole, and the equator on the globe.
- Students should be able to label the layers of the Earth: Inner Core, Outer Core, Mantel, and Crust.
